Broken Hill

Optional off-train sightseeing tours are available along the Indian Pacific journey. Step off the train and experience the history and colour of some of our most famous outback towns. These tours are typically 1 hour duration but may vary due to train schedules. Tours are at modest extra cost and are booked en route.

Broken Hill - The Silver City

Broken Hill has been a major producer of silver, lead and zinc since 1883 hence its tag as the 'Silver City' and is currently thriving. The town is set in a remote and vast landscape of rugged ranges, mulga bush, desert plains, home to kangaroos, emus and Wedge-tail eagles. The natural attractions combined with the clear light and beautiful colours have inspired many fine artists who base themselves here. Hot climate for much of the year, chilly winter nights and sunny days.

TOUR FARES: Adult $22 / Child $10
DURATION: Approximately 1 hour
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Learn about the rich mining history. Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Base. Tour the city and surrounds. Visit one of the impressive art galleries.

Adelaide - The Festival City

First laid out in 1836 by Colonel William Light. This elegant city is noted for its superb parklands, galleries and colonial buildings near beaches and hills. The Mediterranean climate lends itself to an outdoor lifestyle. There are numerous vineyards in close proximity producing world class wines and alfresco dining with scores of restaurants, pubs, and cafes within a short stroll of the city centre.

Cook - The Nullarbor Plain (no charge)

Cook, once a thriving railway settlement, now has only a handful of residents left and is one of the world's most isolated outposts. Some 1,500kms from Perth, its scattered lonely buildings straddle the Trans Continental rail line in the middle of the vast, harsh Nullabor (treeless) Plain. The train stops here for a short while to change drivers and take on water. Guests have the opportunity to breifly explore what today is little more than a ghost town.

TOUR FARES: No Cost
DURATION: Approximately 1 hour
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS: Explore the historical sights of Cook.

Kalgoorlie - Australia's Gold Capital (Night tour)

The gold rush, set off by Paddy Hannan's discovery in 1893 was one of the biggest in Australian history. One hundred years on, the world's largest single open cut mining operation continues to recover the precious metal and the city has prospered as a result. There is a lot of fine architecture including the magnificent Town Hall. Kalgoorlies's inland, desert fringe position provides a warm dry climate for much of the year, but don't be concerned, there are plenty of grand old 'goldfields' pubs to help quench your thirst.

TOUR FARES: Adult $28 / Child $18 / Family $74
DURATION: Approximately 1 hour an 15 mins
TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

Hear the story of the Largest Outback City in Australia that was built on gold. Learn about the sometimes risque past and hardships encountered in the search for the illusive Gold. Inspect the massive 'superpit' Goldmine*, now more than 400m deep and over 3.3kms long, great viewing from the Lookout and Floodlight at night. Travel along Hannan St to view the Heritage Building and the history of the many pubs.

After flying from Perth to Sydney many times, I decided this time to take the train instead - best decision I have made! Thoroughly recommend Gold Kangaroo!! This is a must do while in Australia.
